Calling all RIT students!
Do you want to get professionally published, and turn your big ideas into a “Booky-Book?” Then we want to hear from you.
RIT Press, through a special initiative sponsored by the RIT Provost’s Office and the School of Communication, will be working with three RIT students this upcoming academic year (2024–2025) to publish their very own publication on a topic of distinct personal importance to them. We are calling this publication series “Booky-Books.” They are our hot-take on the zine genre. Booky-Books are short on page count, small in size, but huge on color-pop visuals and big-issue impact.
The application process closed on September 20, 2024. Up to three students will be selected for this opportunity by end of September.
Eligibility requirements:
- Students must be full-time undergraduates at RIT
- Students can pursue any degree major at RIT
- They must be able to commit, in good faith, to weekly meetings from October – February to work on their publication with the project’s point-person, Dr. Hinda Mandell (School of Communication)
- Students agree to participate fully in the editorial process
- They understand that their publication will be on a topic of importance to them that is non-fiction or journalistic in nature
- They agree to participate and distribute their publication at the RIT Zine Fest in March 2025
The application form asks students for:
- Name
- RIT email address
- College
- Major
- If you could author a Booky-Book on any topic (knowing it has to be non-fiction, personal and/or journalistic in nature), what topics would you like to explore? (Up to three sentences will suffice.)
- Select six words to describe yourself.
- We’d like to get to know you and your interests. What are some of your favorite ways to spend your time? (A few sentences will suffice.)
Upon publication, each participating student will receive five free copies of their Booky-Book, and a one-time $500 honorarium. The copyright for the finished work is shared between the student author and RIT Press. But the student author retains copyright to their own original contribution. Each Booky-Book will have its own ISBN number and bar code.

We look forward to hearing from you!
